Trust Goes Both Ways

Marisol was aware of everything around her. Although she could barely move, she sensed everything in the room. She could sense Emilio sleeping. He was exhausted, like her. Slowly opening her eyes, she turned her head and looked at him. The doctor had not lied outright. This much was true. He was correct; he confessed his intentions initially. She would have left him at that moment. Though she was uncertain where she would have gone.

When she manifested, she could feel the air on her skin and the warmth of the anger flushing her cheeks. She remembered the look of terror on Kalidah’s face. She remembered her friend fleeing from her presence. But not this man. He stood his ground despite the threat to his life and talked to her. Helped her remember who she was. Held her. He sat with her and held her hand. He spoke to her, and she could feel the truth in his words. She could feel it in his hands, in his voice. She felt his omission. He wanted to say something else. He wanted to say I am very fortunate to have you in my life. The omission was the reason she gripped his hand. He was not risking his life to put a spirit at rest.

He was risking his life for her.
